An Analysis Of Time Poverty Determinants By Income Classes
Park Sae-Jung

Abstract
This study empirically analyzes the heterogeneity of time use by income class among Korean workers using the concept of time poverty. For the analysis, we used the 17th main survey and supplementary survey of the Korea Labor and Income Panel, which provides detailed information on people¡¯s daily time use and personal income. The subjects of the study are wage and non-wage workers aged between 18 and 59. They are divided into the poor, middle and high income classes based on equivalized household income. Time poverty is identified by using subject's daily time data. Through the Probit Analysis, we look at the factors that determine time poverty by the income classes. As a result, regardless of income level, factors affecting time poverty were gender and marital status. Depending on the income classes, time poverty is influenced by self-employment, log of household assets and log of hourly wages. Within the income poor class, we observed that the poor class are more sensitive to the hourly wage, so they works more when the hourly wage goes up. Meanwhile, the middle class showed a significant negative correlation. High-income class did not have a significant effect on time poverty. In terms of the sensitiveness to the hourly wage, the poor class are more vulnerable to time poverty than the other classes.
